EC Schedules National Local By-Elections for November 11

Introduction

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced plans to hold nationwide by-elections on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, to fill vacant positions in various Electoral Areas and Unit Committees across Ghana.

Reason for the By-Elections

According to the Electoral Commission the decision comes after several vacancies were created following the resignation or passing of some Assembly and Unit Committee members, in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by Act 940.

EC Nomination Details

In a statement signed by Electoral Commission Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Commission revealed that the nomination process will open on Monday, October 6, and close on Thursday, October 16.

How to Obtain and Submit Forms

Nomination forms will be available for free at all Electoral Commission District Offices or can be downloaded from the Commission’s official website — www.ec.gov.gh/forms/ Completed forms are to be submitted between Monday, October 13, and Thursday, October 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and again from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

Nomination Requirements

Each applicant must submit four copies of their nomination form along with two recent passport-sized photos on a red background. For Electoral Area elections, each form must be endorsed by a proposer, a seconder, and eighteen registered voters from the area. Unit Committee nominations, however, require a proposer, a seconder, and eight other registered voters from the same locality.

Submission Process

The Electoral Commission stressed that all forms must be submitted in person by the candidates or their proposers and seconders to the designated Returning Officer.

Regions and Districts Involved

The by-elections will take place at more than 1,500 polling stations across regions including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Volta, Central, Eastern, Bono, Ahafo, Western, and Western North. Districts expected to participate include Ablekuma Central, Weija-Gbawe, La-Nkwantanang, Adenta, Cape Coast, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem, Mfantseman, Jomoro, Ellembelle, Nzema East, Sekondi-Takoradi, Asuogyaman, Yilo Krobo, Suhum, New Juaben, Adansi South, Obuasi Municipal, Bosomtwe, Offinso North, Keta, Ketu South, Ho, and Afadjato South, among others.
