John Mahama’s Official Visit to China: Strengthening Ties for Ghana’s Growth

Beijing, China — October 2025

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, paid an official visit to China this October, marking another milestone in the long-standing relationship between the two nations. John Mahama’s five-day trip was not only about diplomacy — it was about deepening partnerships, attracting investment, and building a future where Ghana’s development is powered by strong international cooperation.

A Visit Rooted in Friendship and Vision

President John Mahama’s journey to Beijing came at the special moment when Ghana and China are celebrating 65 years of diplomatic relations. Over the decades, China has supported Ghana in several ways — from roads and bridges to energy and trade — but this visit showed a renewed focus on innovation, digital growth, and inclusive development.

While in Beijing, President Mahama met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to stronger ties and discussed how Ghana and China could work together on projects in infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, and manufacturing.

China’s leadership praised Ghana’s stable democracy and its drive to industrialise. They assured Ghana of continued support, saying the two countries could move beyond traditional trade and start exploring new areas like technology, green development, and the digital economy.

Focus on Women and Inclusive Growth

During his visit, President John Mahama also took part in the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, co-hosted by China and UN Women. Mahama used her position as the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues to draw attention to Ghana’s advancements in women’s empowerment and to urge more international cooperation in bridging gender inequalities throughout Africa.
Emphasizing that “no country can develop fully if half of its population is left behind,” he urged world leaders to invest education, women-owned businesses, and equal chances more.

Tangible Gains for Ghana

The trip wasn’t just ceremonial — it produced concrete results.
China announced new financial commitments to support Ghana’s local development projects. According to Ghanaian officials, a grant package of around RMB 400 million was pledged for key initiatives, including:

  • The construction of a modern market at Aflao,
  • Support for Ghana’s “24-Hour Economy” policy,
  • Development of a new glass factory in the Western Region, and
  • Green city projects promoting sustainable urban living.

John Mahama also addressed a Ghana–China Business Forum in Beijing, where he invited Chinese investors to take advantage of Ghana’s favourable investment climate. John Mahama said, “Ghana is one of Africa’s safest and most promising investment destinations,” citing the country’s security, natural resources and young labor force.

A Partnership with Global Impact

Both Ghana and China agreed to work more closely within global platforms such as the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the United Nations. Presidents Mahama and Xi talked about the significance of climate action, fair trade, and bolstering developing economies with more equitable global governance structures.

John Mahama noted that rather than focusing solely on conducting business, Ghana and China’s interaction is about learning, sharing, and growing together. “We want our people to live better lives as a result of this partnership,” also he added. Respect for one another and a shared objective form the basis of our collaboration.

Looking Ahead

As President John Mahama returned home, the message from Beijing was clear: Ghana is open for business, open for innovation, and ready to move forward with confidence.
The challenge now is turning the signed commitments into real progress on the ground — more jobs, stronger industries, and better living standards for everyday Ghanaians.

A more balanced connection between Africa and China, one built on cooperation, value creation, and mutual growth rather than aid or loans, is also paved with this visit.

An Icon of Hope

Mahama’s formal visit to China serves as a noteworthy reminder that diplomacy may still be used to advance development. Building bridges, encouraging collaboration, and creating a common future vision were the main goals, not merely taking pictures or giving speeches. This visit could prove to be a turning point, as Ghana maintains its position as a leading country in West Africa, while also creating opportunities for technology, trade and sustainable development that will benefit generations to come.
