The lawyer for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has announced his withdrawal from one of the high-profile criminal cases involving his client, citing several concerns surrounding the proceedings.

Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM on Thursday, June 11, lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi revealed that he had already informed both his client and the court of his decision to step away from one of the pending cases before the High Court in Accra

Chairman Wontumi Faces Three Separate Criminal Cases

Chairman Wontumi is currently facing three separate criminal cases before the courts. Two of the cases are connected to illegal mining activities while the other pertains to allegations of defrauding the state-owned Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM).

Concerns Over Judicial Process and Scheduling Conflicts Raised Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s comments have raised fears about some aspects of the judicial process, suggesting outside influences may be at work in the case, possibly inviting more attention from the public to the ongoing trials.

The former MP for Asante-Akim North also complained about the court’s insistence on his personal appearance when it knew of his scheduling conflicts with his multiple court commitments.

According to him, the situation raises important questions about fairness and professional accommodation within the judicial process.

Potential Ghana Bar Association Attention Over Legal Concerns

Although he did not immediately provide detailed information about the concerns he cited, his comments suggest that the matter could soon attract the attention of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) if a formal petition is filed.

The withdrawal comes at a critical stage in Chairman Wontumi’s legal battles. His cases have attracted significant public interest due to his prominent role within the opposition NPP and the nature of the allegations against him.

The Samreboi case from which Mr. Appiah-Kubi is withdrawing is one of the cases associated with alleged illegal mining operations.
