The minister said the decision was prompted by what he described as a “new development” that poses a threat to public safety.
“We have become aware of a new development that presents a danger to public safety.”

Officials will audit current gun records, enhance supervision and adopt reforms to boost accountability and guarantee that guns are only possessed by eligible persons.

The announcement comes after a shooting incident was reported at a property owned by Israel Safo in the Greater Accra Region involving Ms. Adwoa Safo.
The incident is said to be linked to the ongoing succession dispute in the Christo Asafo Mission after the death of its founder, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo, last September.
Leadership dispute in the courts
The succession dispute has led to rival claims to the leadership of the church and its associated institutions, with legal processes already in train.
According to a statement issued by the Kwadwo Safo family, Ms. Adwoa Safo was at the property to enforce a court injunction during an installation programme linked to Israel Safo when the shooting occurred.
Police are currently investigating the allegations, and no official conclusions have been announced.
